This briefing outlines the number of research grants funded by our member charities starting in 2024 that involved animals. We provide a breakdown of the types of animals used.

Data notes 

  • From the 154 AMRC member charities, 113 reported awarding grants starting in 2024. 

  • Of these 113 charities, 64 (56.6%) funded at least one grant involving animals starting in 2024. 

  • Out of 2,901 grants, 2,726 (94%) reported on the involvement of animals. 546 involved animals, representing 20% of 2,726 grants. 

  • Animals reported were mice, rats, fish, insects, pigs, rabbits, immature forms of vertebrates, dogs, reptiles, amphibians, cattle, other rodents, non-human primates, chickens, non-vertebrate marine animals, horses and sheep. 

  • Of the 546 grants that reported using animals, 501 (91.8%) answered if the animals were genetically modified. 352 grants involved genetically modified animals, representing 70.3% of 501. 

This data was provided as part of the AMRC data collection between January and February 2025.
