Nicola Perrin

Nicola became Chief Executive of AMRC in 2021, having previously been a Trustee for five years. Her background is in policy, strategy and engagement. Nicola was at Wellcome for fifteen years, where she led the policy team. She has had a particular focus on ensuring responsible use of patient data, including setting up the Understanding Patient Data initiative.

Nicola is also on the Boards of Genomics England and UK Biobank, and was awarded an MBE in New Year’s Honours 2020 for services to science.

Louise Wren

Louise joined AMRC in June 2023. She oversees external affairs at the AMRC and manages our relationship with key partners and supporters. Prior to joining the AMRC, Louise was Head of External Affairs at the Francis Crick Institute managing its policy, government affairs and external communications activities. She has also worked in policy and public affairs roles at Wellcome, the Medical Research Council and the BioIndustry Association. Outside of work, Louise is a patient adviser to UCLH and a member of its Person-Centred Care Committee.

Karen Hobbs

Karen joined AMRC in July 2024 with a focus on providing support for AMRC current and prospective member charities, and liaising with external partners to support the smooth running of the charity.

Karen’s prior experience comes from working in scientific membership organisations. She started her career as a member of the account management and technical support team at Lhasa Limited, a membership organisation and charity creating scientific software, and then moved to the Society of Chemical Industry where she was Head of Stakeholder Engagement with responsibility for engaging members in relevant networks and communities, and setting up a Corporate Network. She holds a Master’s Degree in Chemistry from the University of Liverpool.

Chris Macdonald

Chris joined AMRC in September 2025 and leads AMRC’s work to support member charities to be expert and responsible research funders. Chris started his career in academia, researching genetic regulation in arthritis and cancer before moving into the charity medical research funding sector where he has worked for over 10 years. Prior to joining the AMRC, he was Head of Research at Pancreatic Cancer UK.

Dr Sarah Hartwell

Sarah joined AMRC in February 2025 as Research Funding Manager. She will lead AMRC’s work supporting charities to fund research well. She previously worked as Research Funding Programme Manager at the NC3Rs and Research Engagement Officer at AMRC member charity the Psoriasis Association. She also holds a PhD in biomedical science from the University of Sheffield.

Saba Sharma

Saba joined AMRC in November 2025 as Research Funding Officer. She has previous experience working in open science at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, and social policy research and advocacy in India. She has a PhD in Geography from the University of Cambridge.

Ellie Davies

Ellie joined AMRC in July 2025 as Policy and Advocacy Manager. She leads the AMRC’s work in embedding research and innovation within the NHS. Prior to joining, Ellie worked for AMRC member charity Cystic Fibrosis Trust, where she led on policy and influencing activity relating to access to medicines. She also has worked for a market access consultancy to accelerate patient access to new medicines, medical technologies, and diagnostics. Alongside her work, Ellie is completing an MSc in Health Policy from Imperial College London.

Henry Lovett

Henry joined AMRC in September 2025 as Policy and Advocacy Manager, covering the earlier stages of the research pathway in universities and translational stages. He has worked in various health and science policy roles, joining us from the Royal Society of Chemistry and previously working at member charity Prostate Cancer UK. He holds degrees in Chemistry from the University of Oxford and Bioimaging Sciences from Imperial College London.

Simon Turpin

Simon joined AMRC in March 2022 as a Policy Officer. As a member of the Policy and Public Affairs team, he will be involved in work on clinical research, patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE), and animal research. Prior to joining the team he was Research Intern at the Health Foundation with a focus on PPIE and equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Simon attended Leicester Medical School as an undergraduate, leaving with a BMedSci and a BSc in Human Behaviour, and completed an MSc in Psychological Studies at University of Glasgow in 2020.

Leonora Bradley

Leo focuses on strengthening communications with our member charities, and the wider research and policy communities. Her key responsibilities include writing the fortnightly member e-newsletter, managing website content and social media, and leading on copy-writing and design for publications.

Her background is in communications and engagement across the healthcare sector - from public relations for pharmaceutical companies to public engagement for a medical research institute. Leo joined the AMRC in 2016.

Sam Stemp

Shivani Maharaj

Shivani joined AMRC in July 2025 to support members in making the most of their data and demonstrating the impact of their research. She has a background in data analysis and previously worked at Researchfish, focusing on research outputs, outcomes, and evaluation.  She enjoys using data to uncover insights that drive learning and strategic decision-making, and holds a Master’s degree in Geophysics from Imperial College London.

Juan Acevedo

Juan has a background in architecture and an MSc in Urban Development Planning at UCL completed in 2022. He has previous experience working as a site architect monitoring the construction of Universities, Hospitals and Public Schools nationwide in Colombia, as well as consultancy in data collection to refurbish workplace concepts and offices in England and the Netherlands.

Shefa Hussain

Alyssa Moaveni

Alyssa joined AMRC in November 2023 as the Admin Officer. She has a BA in Archaeology from the University of Southampton and over three years of experience in admin support – working in both private and public sector organisations. Her role at AMRC involves diary management and general admin support for the team, as well as liaising with our external IT, HR, and Finance partners.

Glen Saffery

Glen joined AMRC as Programme Manager for the UK Collaborative for Cancer Clinical Research (UK3CR) in May 2025. The collaborative brings together cancer clinical research groups to share priorities, identify best practice and support collaborative efforts across the UK cancer research landscape. Prior to joining AMRC, Glen worked for member charity Bowel Research UK (formerly Bowel Disease Research Foundation), and in political roles in Westminster.
