We support our charities to fund research as effectively as possible and we provide a kitemark of quality for their research processes. We help them to navigate a changing landscape and be on the front foot.

This involves:

  • developing guidance, advice, tools and training
  • supporting our members to fund research well and make good use of limited resources.
  • regular newsletters, which provide updates on sector developments.

Our charities also have access to...

If our Full member charities award funding via open competition…

  • Their 'indirect' costs of research in universities can be covered by the Charity Research Support Fund (CRSF).
  • Their ‘direct’ costs of clinical research in the NHS can be covered by NIHR Clinical Research Networks under the Attributing the costs of health and social care Research and Development (AcoRD) agreement.

We assess Full members against our requirements and our six principles of expert review to ensure they meet our high standards for decision-making in research funding.

We help Introductory members work towards meeting Full membership criteria which is recognised by universities, government and funding bodies as an indicator of quality research funding.
