Data notes

AMRC charities are a major contributor to UK medical research 

  • MRC and NIHR UK research spend from 2024-25 annual reports. Spending on research by health departments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland not illustrated.
  • AMRC member financial data for this and previous financial years are obtained via an annual data collection exercise. Financial data collected is categorised into four domains: research expenditure in the UK; overseas research expenditure; capital projects (including building and equipment over £50K); other charitable activities (e.g. welfare, support, care and information).

Commitment to research investment continues

  • All figures calculated from survey responses from AMRC member charities during our annual data collection 2025. 

Strong demand for research funding

  • Application rates graph: Of the 135 members who responded to the survey, when asked whether their organisation had seen a change in the number of funding applications received, 64 reported an increase, 10 reported a decrease, 48 reported no change, and 13 said the question was not applicable.  

Grant extensions were widespread

  • Extensions graph: The 135 members that responded to the survey were asked the question: What proportion of their grants portfolio have been awarded an extension? This can include both costed and non-costed extensions. Of the 135 responses, 56 selected < 25%, 53 selected 25%-50%, 19 selected 51%-75%, and 7 selected > 75%.
