We are pleased to announce that Louise Wood is the new Chair of the AMRC.

Louise was introduced as our new Chair by outgoing Chair Lord Sharkey, who is stepping down following seven years in the role, at the AMRC 2022 Annual General Meeting last week. AMRC members may recognise Louise, as she previously worked on secondment as Director of Policy and Public Affairs for the organisation. She brings significant experience from within the research sector, having previously worked as Director of Science, Research and Evidence at the Department of Health and Social Care and Deputy CEO of the National Institute for Health and Care Research, as well as Council Member for the Medical Research Council.

AMRC CEO Nicola Perrin welcomed Louise on behalf of the AMRC staff: “We are delighted to welcome Louise as our new Chair and to start an exciting new chapter at the AMRC. She brings so much expertise to the role and we’re all looking forward to working with her on supporting medical research charities to fund high quality research and deliver benefit to patients.”

Commenting on her appointment, Louise said:

“Thanks to the public’s generosity, the UK benefits from a dynamic medical research charity sector which plays a vital and distinct role in our vibrant research environment. I’m delighted to be joining the AMRC to help support and promote the impact of our members’ research activities, collaborating with others and championing partnership with patients and the public in all stages of research.”
