Last week, NHS England published its healthcare science strategy for England. It outlines how the NHS Long Term Plan will be delivered with a central focus on digital health and technology.

The strategy sets out four priorities:

  1. To deliver transformation in scientifically-led services, new and flexible NHS science roles will be created to boost diagnostics and use digital technologies to process patient data from apps and wearables.
  2. To attract and support research and innovation, measures on clinical academic careers will be taken forward, a framework for research, development and innovation will be created, and clinical innovation will be evaluated in partnership with charities, academia and industry.
  3. To transform the workforce, a Workforce Implementation Plan will better define research roles, careers and entry routes for NHS staff.
  4. To improve and integrate information through partnerships, patients, the public, charities, and other medical research funders will help in the design and testing of innovative technologies.
