We’re delighted to welcome three new trustees to our Executive Council: Dan Burkwood (Cancer Research UK), Lea Milligan (MQ) and Tom Nutt (Meningitis Now).

The three new trustees were confirmed at our 2023 AGM, and will take over from Cathy Yelf (Macular Society), Ashley Bayston (Lewy Body Society) and Ian Walker (Cancer Research UK). We’d like to thank those reaching the end of their tenure for the time they’ve served on the Board. Their contributions have been invaluable, particularly during the challenging years of the COVID pandemic and through the recent cost of living crisis.

Our new Trustees bring a wealth of expertise and a range of experience to the Board. Dan Burkwood is currently Director of Research Operations and Communications at Cancer Research UK (CRUK). He has over 15 years of experience in research funding at CRUK and currently leads a department responsible for the charity’s research funding and evaluation, as well as research communications and engagement. Prior to this, Dan worked for the Big Lottery Fund providing support for grant holders.

With over 15 years of charity sector experience, Lea Milligan is a passionate communicator and collaborator. He has been Chief Executive of MQ since 2020 and advocates for a whole mind, body and brain approach to mental health research. Prior to this role, Lea worked as Chief Executive of Mercy Ships UK, an international NGO, delivering surgery, medical capacity building and infrastructure development across West Africa.

Dr Tom Nutt has been CEO of Meningitis Now since 2017. Prior to working for this charity, Tom was Chief Executive of Healthwatch Essex and has held several roles in health and care policy. He was also previously an academic historian based at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he lectured and researched socio-economic and demographic history.
