The Topol review on the future challenges of the healthcare workforce was published last week. It focuses on the skills and workforce theme and makes recommendations that will enable NHS staff to make the most of innovative technologies such as genomics, digital medicine, AI and robotics to improve services, in part by expanding research and development programmes. The independent report was produced by Health Education England and will form part of draft health and care Workforce Strategy for England to 2027.

Many of the recommendations relate to safeguarding patient data and being accessible for clinicians, as well as giving staff the required training in order for the workforce to be equipped to deal with new technologies. These recommendations support the aims of the NHS Long-Term Plan, and the workforce implementation plan, helping to ensure a sustainable NHS.
