Last week, Professor Sir Venki Ramakrishnan, President of the Royal Society, wrote an open letter to Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt when both men were still vying to become Prime Minister. Ramakrishnan highlighted a new analysis that shows the UK collaborates with the EU on research much more than previously thought: a third of UK research papers are co-authored by EU-based researchers.

He also emphasised difficulties with the UK’s current immigration system, arguing that high costs compared to other countries would put off EU researchers from choosing to work in the UK. AMRC continues to advocate for an immigration system that is welcoming, flexible, and fit for present and future needs.
