Last week the full text of the draft Political Declaration on the Future Relationship between the UK and EU was published after it was agreed at negotiator level. The draft text, an expanded version of the initial outline published previously, includes some positive signs for the sector including a potential open door for the UK to participate in future EU programmes for science and innovation, such as Horizon Europe, and the possibility of cooperation between the UK and the European Medicines Agency.

The text followed publication of the draft Withdrawal Agreement on 14 November. At a special weekend summit, the EU Council approved both documents, the first of a series of ratifications required to ensure the Withdrawal Agreement becomes law – avoiding a no-deal Brexit  – before the deadline of 29 March 2019. The UK Parliament will vote on the deal on 11 December. AMRC continues to champion the patient perspective, communicating that there must be no damaging impacts on patients as a result of the UK’s decision to leave the EU, whatever the final deal looks like.
