Following weeks of speculation, Theresa May has announced she will step down as leader of the Conservative party on 7 June and remain as Prime Minister until a successor is chosen. The success of Nigel Farage’s Brexit party at the European elections is adding pressure on Conservative leadership candidates to set out their Brexit credentials. AMRC continue to call for a Brexit outcome that ensures no negative effects on patients and the public, arguing that a no-deal would be particularly damaging.

In other Parliamentary news, Chris Green MP led a debate last week on clinical trials in which he highlighted the importance of negotiating access to the infrastructure which underpins the new EU Clinical Trials Regulation as part of UK-EU future relationship discussions. The Minister for Care, Caroline Dinenage MP, and Shadow Health Secretary, Jonathan Ashworth MP, both referenced AMRC messaging and statistics during the debate, with Ashworth citing our assertion that a no-deal Brexit would risk patient safety and jeopardise pioneering medical research in the UK.
