Professor Chris Whitty has been appointed as the new Chief Medical Officer for England and as the Government’s Chief Medical Advisor. He is currently Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department of Health and Social Care and will be replacing Professor Dame Sally Davies, who had held the role since 2009.

Professor Whitty will continue to serve as a Professor of Public and International Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and as an NHS Consultant Physician in acute medicine and infectious diseases. Dr Jenny Harries OBE will be the new Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England.
