The government has published its response to the consultation on proposed new work priorities for the National Data Guardian for Health and Social Care (NDG). Three priorities will be taken forward:

  • ‘supporting public understanding and knowledge’, which includes a focus on public engagement and barriers to patients accessing their data
  • ‘encouraging information sharing for individual care’, which includes training and developing guidance for healthcare professionals
  • ‘safeguarding a confidential health and care system’, which will focus on safeguarding confidentiality

The views of our member charities have been recognised, with both the need to provide more tailored information to patients on how their data has been used and the need for meaningful engagement with the public being included in the government’s response. The consultation followed parliament’s decision in December 2018 to place the role of the NDG on a statutory footing.
