Over the past month, the Lords Science and Technology Committee has been exploring science research funding in universities. This has included the impact from the government’s commitment to reach 2.4% of UK GDP invested in R&D as well as the recommendations from the recent review of post-18 education.

As part of the Committee’s inquiry representatives from across the sector, including AMRC members, have warned of the potentially damaging impact of reducing student fees on university research without ‘top-up’ funding from Government. Witnesses have also been united in their calls for baseline funding for excellent university research to be increased. Universities are vital partners for the medical research charity sector; in 2018, 87% of AMRC’s members’ investment in UK research took place in universities.
