AMRC's statement on the publication of Life Sciences Industrial Strategy Published: 29 August 2017 Commenting on the publication of the Life Sciences Industrial Strategy, Aisling Burnand MBE, chief executive of the Association of Medical Research Charities said: “One of the things which makes the UK’s life sciences sector world-leading is the variety of underpinning funding sources, including strong research charity input. We are pleased that the vital role that medical research charities play is reflected in the Strategy. Looking ahead to the sector deal, there is a clear opportunity for Government to set policies that harness and enhance charities’ roles as innovators, collaborators and risk-takers. Charity investment in early-stage research has been proven to spark further investment in UK life sciences. “The Strategy’s focus on data and digital technologies is also welcome. We have been advocating for joined-up, responsible use of patient data to benefit patient care and advance research. Recent Government decisions make us hopeful that a turning point has been reached. Progress on creating a truly digital and 21st century NHS has been far too slow and patient care has been compromised as a result. “We now ask the Government to ensure that, in developing the sector deal for the life sciences, they continue to recognise medical research charities as a vital partner.
