AMRC statement on NHS England research plan Published: 5 April 2017 Commenting on the publication of the NHS England research plan, Aisling Burnand, Chief Executive of AMRC said: “We are pleased that NHS England have published the Research Plan for 2017/18. The vast majority of the public believe the NHS should play an important role in supporting research for new treatments and that patients would like to be offered opportunities to be involved in trials of new medicines or treatments. “What is critical now is the action NHS England takes to implement the plan. AMRC stands ready to engage and work with NHS England on this. It is positive that the plan includes measures to tackle some of the barriers to research in the NHS, including the payment of Excess Treatment Costs. “With the UK preparing to leave the EU and the life sciences industrial strategy currently being developed, NHS England must take a more active role in driving the research agenda and get on board with the life sciences strategy. In the UK, the life sciences sector is vital for both patients and the economy. NHS England must fulfil its role in ensuring that England maintains a positive environment to undertake medical research for charities and others investing in research.” Notes to Editors: 1.
