How to make research collaboration work
We are delighted to bring you our Ways & means report and map. The project began in 2009 with a simple aim, to answer the question: ‘who's working with who?’
We knew from speaking to our member charities and other research funders that the medical research sector contained many partnerships between funders, and we knew that this area of activity was important to our membership, but no-one seemed to have a sector-wide picture.
Working with an Economic and Social Research Council-funded intern, we mapped the funding landscape and mined the experiences of research funders to provide a resource for all funders. Our map is a snapshot of some of the collaborations that AMRC members of all sizes are involved in.

The report looks at the factors that influence decisions to collaborate, the pitfalls and the benefits – the ability to increase the pot of money, reach new researchers, and leverage the skills and expertise that partners bring. It also provides advice for organisations developing new funding collaborations.
