Reporting animal research: AMRC recommends new guidelines

The open access journal PLoS Biology and five other journals have published the ARRIVE guidelines to improve reporting of animal experiments.

This follows an important initiative of NC3Rs, with which AMRC has been involved.

The guidelines will help scientists and editors improve the stringency and completeness of reporting of animal research and in turn assist peer reviewers and funders who assess it.

A similar model for reporting clinical research, known as CONSORT, has led to measurable improvements in quality and transparency and we welcome this important step in improving reporting practice in an understandably controversial area of biomedical research.

We encourage members to ensure any animal research they fund is reported in accordance with the guidelines. In light of this and other developments, we will be reviewing, and potentially strengthening, our policy statement on the use of animals in medical research.
