In Figures: Charity Research Support Funds

Due to the diversity of charity funding a robust figure for the proportion of the full Economic Costs of research that charities support is difficult to obtain. Based on the available data it is approxiamtely 60%.

The Wellcome Trust has calculated its average contribution to be 58.6% of overall fEC.

Cancer Research UK quotes an average provision of 50-60%.

A snapshot survey conducted by AMRC indicated an average contribution of just below 50%.

RCUK/UUK Review of the Impact of Full Economic Costing on the UK Higher Education sector (2009, Annexes: Annex 7A Responses from the charity sector)

The Charity Research Support Funds are intended to provide an additional 20% of the full Economic Costs of research. Working from the assumption that charities are providing 60% of full Economic Costs, this tops charity funding up to 80% of full Economic Costs,  the same as research councils provide.
