Quality

AMRC membership is the hallmark of quality research funding.

We can provide references for member charities seeking funding or other project support, affirming that they meet our standards:

  • Having a published research strategy
  • Funding quality work through peer review. We assess charities’ peer review processes when they apply for membership and audit every five years.

Universities, government and funding bodies use AMRC membership as an indicator of quality.

Collective voice

AMRC is the strong collective voice for medical research charities in the UK.

Benefits

Membership entitles charities to the following benefits.

  • Funding from AMRC members that is awarded via open competition is eligible for the Charity Research Support Fund (CRSF). The fund adds up to 28p to every charity pound invested in universities. In England the fund provides higher education institutes with over £198m/year of infrastructure costs, enabling charity money to be used to support the direct costs of research.
  • The AcoRD agreement ensures that AMRC members only pay the direct research costs of clinical research in the NHS. The Department of Health will meet all costs for local trial co-ordination and management, data collection, and regulatory fees.
  • Members with an annual research spend of up to £25m can use the Researchfish research outcomes system at no cost for up to three years.

Support

AMRC helps members meet their charitable objectives. We:

  • Offer high-quality training workshops and seminars on emerging issues facing our members
  • Provide one-to-one support
  • Produce pragmatic guidance and toolkits which our members can use in their own work
  • Build members’ capacity in peer review, though operating an audit of peer review processes.

Influence

Our role is to ensure as positive a climate as possible for research charities. We

  • Influence the environment, enabling members to achieve their aims
  • Scan the horizon for key developments
  • Interpret the environment, providing information about the world in which member operate
  • Represent the collective charity voice with government, partners and other stakeholders.

Connect

AMRC connects medical research charities to encourage collaboration and to share learning. We:

  • Collect and share sector data
  • Create opportunities for members to share leaning, to avoid duplication of effort and to maximise the value of all they do
  • Offer opportunities for charities to work with industry and public funders
  • Encourage collaboration and share best practice
  • Promote members works to each other and the wider world
  • Support the medical research charity community.
